EXPO.health, a community of healthcare IT professionals, ranging from CIO, CMIO, director or analyst working at a hospital, health system, physician practice, vendor, or government agency, was created to break down silos and focus on sharing, collaboration, and support. Recently, I had the opportunity to attend the EXPO.health 2019 conference in Boston. Based on the conversations and the session discussions, health IT companies, and government organizations can implement practical innovations today rather than ideas that affect you years from now.
My insights from the 3-day conference and all the sessions that I attended can be summarized into three main themes.
Communication and patient engagement.
How can we get patients and clinicians on the same page? OpenNotes is a movement dedicated to spreading the availability of visit notes to patients and study the effects of doing so. OpenNotes researched the benefits of physicians making notes available to patients, as well as the uncertainty of this approach in the organization. The studies found that ease of navigation is crucial in the implementation process, and where fewer the clicks, the higher the note opening rates. Making notes accessible on cellular devices is also an important aspect. Providing access to notes would benefit patients, families, and caregivers and empower them to make better health decisions. With more information, quality of care will improve overall.
The Cloud in Healthcare.
Healthcare organizations are leveraging the power of the cloud to enhance collaboration, cut costs, utilize big data, and efficient technology. In one of these cloud sessions, Broad Institute shared their real-life experiences in using the cloud, which can be both beneficial and problematic. Cloud gives you shared compute resources and visibility in spending and usage. On the other hand, cloud storage and compute resources can become potentially costly if the environment is uncontrolled and unmanaged.
Physician burnt out and the need for support.
Hard to use technology that requires multiple clicks, slow loading, and difficult to use interface is a significant contributor to physician burnouts. Providers struggle with inefficient technology that causes unnecessary interruptions to daily workflow. There are IT solutions out there that enable providers to spend more time focusing on patients and spend less time on solving technical issues.
